It is ominous reading for any Indian. We have the dubious distinction of being World Number One in road accident deaths. According to official estimates, 1,14,590 people died on Indian roads in 2007 alone; more than 13 people every hour on an average. The WHO report calls this an epidemic and rightly so. In India, 13 people die in road accidents every hour, making the country World No. 1 in road fatalities. Weak emergency medical response mechanism in most Indian cities including Delhi, the capital that has 35 EMS ambulances (CATS) for a population of 12 million Annual death toll from road accidents in India is significantly higher than 20 years of Kashmir insurgency and Kargil war (1999) put together.
