Who we are
SaveLIFE Foundation (SLF) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation focused on enabling Bystander Care, or community-driven emergency medical response, for road accident victims. SLF was founded by Piyush Tewari, the 2010 Rolex Laureate and Krishen Mehta, Board Member, Aspen Institute (USA) in February 2008 in the wake of high number of road accident deaths in India due to lack of rapid care for victims. Bystander Care is critical to India as the country does not have a well-established Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system to bring urgent care to accident victims, leading to thousands of deaths by the road side every year and giving India the dubious distinction of being world number one in road accident deaths.
In the absence of formal emergency services Police serve as first-responders in most cases and yet they lack any training to support the victims. Bystanders are reluctant to help for fear of harassment and very few have received any training in first-aid. Yet, we cannot ignore the crucial role that they can play in saving accident victims.
Over the past 2 years, SaveLIFE has trained over 3000 Police responders in Delhi, U.P. and Maharashtra in Basic Trauma Care skills leading to a significant enhancement in survival rate of accident victims. We are currently establishing India's first comunity-driven emergency response service that will train, connect and mobilize community volunteers and concerned agencies within minutes of a call being received by our dedicated call-center. The project is under implementation in city of Delhi and Rural Thane.
SLF is registered as a public charitable trust under Sections 12A & 80G of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
With over 100,000 road accident deaths a year, India is World No. 1 in road fatalities (Source: NCRB Year 2006 figures). Of these, majority of deaths are in the productive age group that leads to a substantial socio-economic loss every year. According to a study by the National Network of Emergency Services (NNES), over 90% accident victims do not receive any form of by-stander care and lose life or limb due to delay in care. Of these over 30% can be saved if timely care is provided.
